  • Bandwidth and VoIP

Bandwidth can affect your sound quality if there is not enough available or it is being consumed by the computers/phones.

  • Your Broadband internet connection will generally have more download speed than upload speed.

  • Each call uses roughly 80 kilobits (kb not kB) of both upload and download.

  • Remember that computers and other internet devices will lower your available bandwidth.

  • If you are using near the full capacity of your connection, latency may increase and affect sound quality.

  • A good rule is to plan to use only 85% of your connections ability

    Test Your Connection:

Below are a few links where you can test your bandwidth.

The result will give you two numbers -- upstream and downstream. Divide the lowest of the 2 numbers by 80.

This is the number of consistent calls your connection can support.

    Example:

Take the upload result and divide by 80.

    In this example there would be enough bandwidth for 21 phones      ( 1724 / 80 = 21.55 ).

However, please remember you should only use 85% of you connection for better quality of service.

    ( 21 * .85 ) = 17.85 or 18 consistent calls can stabily be held by this connection.

NOTE: This is assuming nothing else on the network is consuming your bandwidth (ie computer traffic)
