  • Wireless Information

When discussing technology, the word wireless gets brought up constantly. The problem is there are many different topics which fall under the word "wireless".

Below you will find the answers to some of the most frequently asked.

Wireless Internet Service Provider vs Wireless Routers

Often this is a point of confusion for an understandable reason. The differences between the two are:

  • Wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP): Wireless internet means that you buy your internet from someone who distributes their internet without any cables. This is the opposite of a cable or DSL provider which uses a cable or telephone line to distribute their internet.

Use of wireless internet services, including Clear, is not recommended for use with Vocalocity. Depending on upload & download speeds, wireless services can support VoIP service. However, wireless connections tend to have periods of latency that may affect the sound quality of calls and make trouble shooting difficult or impossible. It is important that any customer wishing to use a wireless connection be prepared to endure periods of poor sound quality related to latency.

This means, we do not recommend Wireless ISPs with our service.

  • Wireless Routers: A wireless router allows you to convert your existing wired internet connection by using a wireless network card. This is much different than a wireless ISP. At Vocalocity, we do not support or sell any phones which can connect to your wireless router. Don't worry, as most wireless routers allow you to plug in the network cables, which our phones require.

    Using Softphones Over Wireless

Vocalocity does not recomment using your software phones over a wirelss connection. If you are having any issues with a softphone, we will ask that you wire in to remove as many issues as possible. Unfortunately, there can be several causes of interference (microwave ovens, cordless phones, other wireless routers, distance from the router, etc.) with wireless routers that cannot be seen.

    Wireless phones:

There are some phones out there which can connect to a wireless router. Vocalocity sells and supports only one of these phones. It is the Cisco 525G.

Please Note: The sound quality achieved in connection with the use of the Cisco 525G over a wireless connection will be directly related to the quality of such wireless connection. In the event that you experience sound quality issues, Vocalocity Technical Support representatives will likely suggest that you test use the phone in a hard-wired mode. To achieve sustained quality performance, you may need to continue to use the telephone in a hardwired mode and/or to augment your wireless infrastructure.

We also sell the Aastra 6757i CT phone. This phone has a wireless handset that works with a wired base station. The wireless handset connects to the base station using the same sort of technology a regular cordless phone uses.

    Wireless Laptop Connection Guide:

Vocalocity Technicians do not recommend or support using your phone through a computer. Some people still choose to do this, so we have made a guide to help get you started. This guide is where our support ends on this matter as there are far too many possibilities to troubleshoot in this situation. Also, using your phone through a computer can severely degrade sound quality. If you are using your phone in this manner, we will not support problems that may occur.
